What is the nature of a mentor relationship?

In traditional understanding, a mentor is someone who offers to a person a commitment to support, guide and
oversee the realization of a long-term goal.   A mentor program for students of  A Course in Miracles is designed to
guide and support a student's study and practice of ACIM teachings in order to realize the goal of true perception.  
Although learning the Course brings us together; it is in the joining itself that brings about true healing.  For in our
joining "all differences (we) thought separated (us)  from one another, fade and grow dim and disappear" (M.2.5.6).
With this, the way is open to see (we) are really part of the same Self, united in our holiness.

What is the mentor's role in this relationship?

It's important to state that there are no differences between the mentor and student in truth; both are equally
innocent, holy Sons of God.  A Course mentor is one who is learning this one truth through the path of A Course in
Miracles, has let go of any special interest and recognizes the mentor role as one in which both can learn the
lesson perfectly.   In support of  a student's journey  the mentor might:

  • Teach concepts and clarify principles of the Course
  • Guide through the program by offering support in the study of the Text and practice of the Workbook
  • Help bring to light the beliefs of the student  that are the real cause of  their pain and guide them to access
    the "right-minded" thoughts of the Holy Spirit
  • Teach by demonstration how to walk the Course's path by sharing insights and experiences

How does this relationship unfold?

  • The student asks for guidance on how best to proceed on this path and then seeks out a mentor
  • A dialog begins between the mentor and student whereby the Holy Spirit guides both on whether they are
    being called to join in this relationship
  • Through discussion and seeking guidance, a decision will be made on what aspect of the Course will be
    the focus of their time together
  • A structure will then be set for study and/or practice
  • After a set period of time, mentor and student will 'check-in' to evaluate the relationship and to determine
    what changes, if any, need to be made

Question of Payment: The true gift in this relationship is the vision of holiness that we give to each other. There is
no payment for the giving and receiving of this Precious Gift.  Donations can be given and will be accepted, in the
spirit of gratitude.  



Please note: The structure in this mentor program is based on The Circle of Atonement 's (Circleofa.org) model of
'a teacher-pupil relationship'.

A Personal Note:

I came to the Course in January of 2000. I have dedicated these past years to the study and practice of ACIM
principles and teachings.  I have discovered in my own life that the promises of this spiritual path are real and
possible.  I have had numerous and profound experiences when applying these principles to all aspects of my life.  
This has resulted in a deeper, lasting peace; an easier way to be in the world; more joyous and harmonious
relationships and a deeper sense of connection to others and to God. When I am in the role of mentor,  I remember
that it is in the giving that I receive as well.  "Healing is holy. Nothing in the world is holier than helping one who asks
for help and two come closer to God in this attempt"  (Psy.V.4)
