What is Spiritual Mentor?
In traditional understanding a mentor is someone who offers to a person a commitment to
support, guide and oversee the realization of a long-term goal. The relationship is based on a
unified understanding of the goal and a structured process the person will engage in to meet the
goal. A spiritual mentor is someone who offers to a person a commitment to support, guide and
oversee the realization of a spiritual long-term goal; to awaken to the awareness of the light of
his or her true nature. The mentor and the person they are supporting both have this goal and it
is in their joining together with this common goal to seek the truth of Who they are, that a
spiritual mentor relationship is born.
What is the overall process?
The spiritual mentor process begins with the understanding that all problems showing up in our
lives are a result of our mind projecting and defending a belief system that says we are separate,
guilty, fragile and insecure. Holding this belief about who we are leads to feelings of confusion,
sadness, anger, loneliness, fear and an overall feeling of disharmony. Therefore, what is in need
of healing is the mind that believes in this limited view of the Self. A Course In Miracle's approach
to this process uses the guidance of the Holy Spirit to help a person let go of the beliefs in a
limited, weak and vulnerable self in order to become aware of their True Self. In the recognition
of Who they are all answers are given and lasting peace is found.
How does a mentor support this process?
The mentor, guided by the Holy Spirit, provides a safe, gentle environment where a person can
begin to question and bring to the surface all that they believe about themselves and the world
and ask for a healing of the mind. The mentor may counsel a person through challenges that are
disturbing and/or painful by offering deep listening, non-judgmental presence and gentleness as
the person discovers their own inner wisdom and willingness to let go of the limiting beliefs that
have lead to the current patterns in their life. The mentor may coach a person by giving
suggestions of how to get in touch with the Divine through meditation, awareness techniques
and processes to release fear, judgment, emotions and false beliefs.
What are the benefits in being supported by a spiritual mentor?
A spiritual mentor who has deepened their own ability to hear guidance, who has gone through
their own process of releasing false beliefs and who has experienced the healing that comes
from being vigilant in letting go of their own blocks to love; can offer practical steps, processes,
and personal experience to help support your journey to remove blocks, gain insight and hear
guidance. This will enable you to align your life with your true purpose, learn how to be present
in the world in a way that reflects the love that is in you and develop a deeper connection with
others, yourself and your Source.
A Personal Note:
I came to the Course in January of 2000. From the beginning I felt that A Course In Miracles was
my path to inner peace. I have dedicated these past years to the study and practice of ACIM
principles and teachings. I have discovered in my own life that the promises of this spiritual path
are real and possible. I have had numerous and profound experiences when applying these
principles to all aspects of my life. This has resulted in a deeper, lasting peace; an easier way to
be in the world; more joyous and harmonious relationships and a deeper sense of connection to
others and to God. In stepping into the role of mentor, I remember that it is in the giving that I
receive as well. "Healing is holy. Nothing in the world is holier than helping one who asks for help
and two come closer to God in this attempt" (Psy.V.4)
